baby got bread
I decided yesterday to try my hands at breadmaker bread.
I've made it before, many years ago through my mom's machine, but it's been since High School sometime, so over 7 years have passed since I last attempted it.
So it started with whole wheat yesterday. I quickly ran into issues with not having honey or enough whole wheat flour, but I quickly improvized with corn syrup and white flour.
Here's the result:
Not so great. It sunk in the middle and was a bit crispy on the crust.
Today, in a bid to redeem my abilities as the number one breadmaker of the day, I tried a white loaf from a recipe I found online.
It turned out much better.

It's Family Day.
I'm not with my family today. I feel like I'm being ripped off. The government should have given me some money to go home to spend the day with my family.
It's fair to say that I'm a cynic.
It's somewhat odd that half of those employed in the province of Ontario have to work today despite it being a holiday.
I'm still on the train that everyone should get their birthday off as a statutory holiday, except for those government employees who already get half the year off while still gaining income.
Oh well.

annoyance
Sometimes it's annoying - when you're trying to contact someone to suggest something new or inform of something that's broken - when the contact information of the person / party you are trying to reach is not available in any way, shape, or form. Take for instance, Blogger. I've been trying to find a place where I can suggest the feature of upload image to cursor rather than to the top of the post, but no matter how far I looked through their site, the closest I got was to the Google Group for them, but no support@blogger.com or anything remotely useful like that.

apartment hunting 201
We found a place to live.
Despite the higher price, (though still significantly less than the 1300 I was expecting), we've been approved for an apartment.

curling... woo!
1. As mentioned last week, I went to the TSC Tankard 2008 Curling Championships Final game this afternoon, which turned out to be between Glenn Howard and Peter Corner. It could have been a tight game seeing as Corner beat Howard in the page playoffs, forcing Howard to go to the Semi-Finals against Mike Harris while Corner's rink went directly to the final.
However, after the first end, it was 4-0 for Howard, and it didn't really change after that. The final score after 6 ends was 9 - 4, and at the end of the 7th, they didn't even count before they called it a game. If they had counted, it would have ended up somewhere around 11 - 4 for Howard.
Some good shots, some bad shots, but overall, not a horrid thing to watch. Curling is one of the few sports that'll keep me interested while watching it.

Just an FYI, my comments used to be run by Haloscan before I switched over to the new blogger template today. But for some reason, the Blogger Comments system was still going on in the background. So I apologize if anyone's left comments and I didn't get back to them. Not because I don't care, but because I didn't know the comments were there.

snow day... again?
Well, it's the second day that the college has been closed in the past week. First time was for about 6 inches of snow, this time for about 3-4 inches of snow and ice. Funny thing is, I didn't find out about the closure until after I was already at work.
So I stayed for a few hours. It'd be pointless to drive home immediately. So I had a nice quiet morning to do a few things that needed to get done and had been sitting on the back burner for a while.
Alas, now I don't know what to do with the rest of my day. Maybe homework, maybe Corner Gas, maybe something else.
For Lent this year, I've given up Internet Social Networking Sites, including Facebook and a few other message boards I followed. I'm still on the no pop kick (over 5 weeks now) and am doing ok so far.
Oh, and I went to the TSC Tankard - Ontario Men's Curling Championship round robin games on Monday night at the Waterloo Rec Centre. Glenn Howard and Mike Harris were on the two sheets closest to us, and I think we were in the background of a tv interview with Harris after he lost. Some good curling. I think we're going to get tickets to the final on Sunday afternoon.
Can't wait. Woo.

It's February.
It started off with getting up at 6:45 on Friday to realize it was a snow day, update the EBC Website with the closure information, and then back to bed. Then I experienced all the fun on the GRT Bus System that you can experience in one day.
First bus (9 to University): 15 minutes late
Second Bus (iExpress at Laurier towards Ainsle Street Terminal): 5 minutes late
Downtown on iExpress: Two people who chose to take the earlier 7F (Fairway via Wilson) from the Laurier Stop got onto the iExpress. They probably shook their head when they saw me sitting there. On our way out, the bus had some trouble getting up the hill on Charles at Frederick / Benton. Oh well.
I got off at Fairview and went for coffee with Dave and then off to Alicia's place for dinner / PS2.
Third Bus (8 University via Courtland / Weber): On Time
Fourth Bus : I got off the third bus (8 University via Courtland / Weber) to transfer to the fourth bus (7D University via University) but as I was running over the 7D platform, it whizzed by me and despite me trying to wave at the driver, he shook his head and drove on by.
Fifth Bus (Technically fourth bus, but it's ok.) (7C Conestoga): Nice ride home. Trudge through the unplowed roads to home. Sleep.
Second Day of February: Only 6 more weeks til Spring. Much better than 6 more weeks of Winter. I don't get this groundhog stuff. I guess it gives hope that the cold is on it's way out within a while, and supplies towns like Wiarton and Puxatony with a tourist trade during the off-season.
Alicia, Amy, and I went to Toronto to the Science Centre. The Titanic Exhibit was on, so that was somewhat cool to see. Upon entry, we got boarding cards with the names and stories of actual passengers who were on the maiden voyage. I was the director of the White Star Line and one of th people most responsible for the building of the ship. In the end, there's a wall with the names of survivors and deceased. I lived, but I was the last person on the lifeboat on the starboard side. (J. Bruce Ismay). I think the movie portrayed him as a coward. There were also a few character actors that could have done more to portray the voyage than they were. One tried to engage, but that was it.
After the science centre (I finally got a chance to ride the cool contraption in the Space Section), we went over to Yorkdale. I was driving, and there was a bit of traffic on the DVP, so I got off at Lawrence Ave in hopes to take a speedy trip across to the Allen Expressway. How was I to know there was a gap between Lawrence East and West, requiring a detour through a really ritzy neighbourhood? (Upon inspection through Google Maps afterwards, a lot of the houses in the area had tennis courts and pools). It was an adventure nonetheless.
Dinner was at the Pickle Barrel and then off to home.
It's been an ok weekend. We'll see what tomorrow brings.
Still looking for a place to live for next year. If anyone knows of a decent 2 - 3 bedroom apartment that's available (with most, if not all, of the requirements listed here, let me know)
