still going

So It's been 23 days now and I'm still going strong. For some reason, I don't see the need to drink pop at the moment... it's almost like I've convinced myself that it's a bad thing, like some sort of "forbidden fruit" that I can't have. I see the Ginger Ale in the pop machine and turn around and walk away. Interesting, to say the least.

I remember these feelings from when I went the two month stretch (currently in 2nd place for time spent without pop and going strong). I actually didn't really feel like having it when I did. It was New Year's eve and I had a bottle or two of American Mountain Dew that was just sitting there not being drank, so I brought it home from school figuring that someone would bring it.

I think the smartest thing for me to do is to just avoid it altogether from now on. We'll see how that goes - hopefully well. However, if I do drink it again, I know that I'll have a reborn awareness of what effects it has on me.

And with that, I leave you with one thought:

Blogs are for writing, not just reading.

well, two thoughts:

Overture Facile is a stupid, stupid game. The logic just surpasses me by about the 20th level or so.

Out.

and... update

17 days. Still going. Although with the decline of pop, my shoulder has started acting up again. With the knots and the pain and the ouchie... you know, like so 2005 Correlation between lack of pop and increase in pain? My mom suggested so. Therefore it must be true. Mothers are always right. It's true. Ask your mom.

Work = wonderfulness as usual. Here is some of the prettying work I did today. The content may not be the greatest, but at least it's something more than it was. It's always getting better.

Some things get worse, but there's not much I can do about that. Only hope and pray that the answer comes before something bad happens. Long term, we're going to be ok. Short term, we'll survive... hopefully.

And now, I'm out.

Go read something wholesome like Ragamuffin Gospel or Blue Like Jazz or Irresistible Revolution or Reaching for the Invisible God [all books I strongly recommend everyone read at least once.]

I'm out.

Night.

day fourteen: kicked the habit

It’s been two weeks since I stopped drinking pop. I’ve found myself desiring it less and less by the day. Sometimes I think I need to have a drink of it, but then I have some water and my longing is gone.

It’s really interesting how you can get addicted to something without realizing it. I’ve been semi-addicted to various computer games, pop, tv shows, the Interweb, and a few other things through life – not because they enhance my quality of life – but for some other reason that just turns on within my head.

I don’t get it.

It’s a good challenge though. Try the two-week challenge. Just give up something that you do a lot that doesn’t enhance your quality of life. It’s worth a shot.

day ...

I'm nearing the end of the second week without pop. Just for clarification, I have had iced tea and hot chocolate is an option if it ever comes up. I'm just trying to clear my addiction with pop - coke, pepsi, gingerale, orange/grape crush, root beer, etc.

I will probably drink of them again, just not now.

I'm actually doing pretty good for the most part. I still get tired mid-afternoon (6-8 hours after I wake up), but I think that's based on internal things, or maybe I just don't sleep well at night, even though I'm in bed by 11-11:30 on a regular night. I've had a lot of water, milk, chocolate milk, and some orange juice, koolaid of some sort, and pink lemonade in the Campus Centre - the best juice they have there... ever... no matter what Jordan Vetro says.

For those who may be interested, the proposed Education Centre at EBC was approved by the Board of Governors last weekend, so they're starting to push forward in hopes that we'll be in it by September. I'll be looking forward to seeing it up (and pending contract extension - a possible nice office WITH A WINDOW!!!) I'll post pictures as things start to happen. I think the first physical evidence we'll see is with the trees coming down, so I'll get some before pictures for the fun of it over the next few weeks.

They closed schools for this:

Now, I don't have a car, so I can't fully judge the weather based on that, but still... it seems that there's not much snow out there... and by noon all the ice will be melted away... if that.

Le sigh.

day 6: a glimpse of hope

Throughout the years, I have had a varied enjoyment of pop. I used to be limited to one per day. Then I realized that I was old enough to make my own decisions and gradually worked my way up to - at some times - 4-5 cans per day. Things weren't going so well. I generally had 2-3 cavities per visit to the dentist. So, I decided things needed to change. So, a few years back, I quit cold turkey for a few weeks, just to see if I could make it. I did, and the next time I went to the dentist, the cavities were less. After a few weeks, I caved and cracked a can again, but this time with a new-found understanding behind what causes tooth decay.

Then, about a year later, I saw Supersize Me. I quit again. Cold Turkey for 2 months, and the only reason I started again was to welcome the New Year with some tasty American Mountain Dew. The next dentist appointment: None! And all those times I consciously decided to cut back, the results were astounding.

Enter this past year. It was bad. 2-3 per day to keep me going. Not good. So, on Sunday Night, I had my last glass of Ginger Ale at Wimpy's and have been clear for 6 days now. Monday and Tuesday were bad. I was exhausted from 1-3 pm, which were prime times for me to be doing stuff at work. I barely made it through. Wednesday, I cracked and tried some DeCaf coffee, which didn't taste very good, so after 2 sips, it went down the drain and that night, I drank about 1.5 litres of chocolate milk. Thursday, I made it through with energy to spare, and Friday I didn't even notice my usual afternoon down-time.

Could this be a change?

We'll see how I do as the days turn into weeks.

blogs are for writing

It seems that most of the people listed to the right [except for Brock] have forgotten that blogs are used for writing, not just for reading. So, here's my feeble attempt at coming across with an update.

1. I had 2 weeks at home over Christmas. They were very relaxing with over 8 hours of sleep every night and lots of time with friends I haven't seen in forever. 75 minutes on the bridge with Gord, Boggle with Kyler, Shopper's Drug Mart with Katie... sigh. Back to work tomorrow.

2. Work. I'm back to work tomorrow after my 2 weeks off [first vacation since... a long time ago. Much needed, well used... looking forward to the next one.] This semester brings a few more challenges including: 2nd athletics fundraiser - to be announced within one week of returning - just need to verify a few details before it goes public, lots of Computer stuff, lots of web updates, couple more surveys, and a large amount of administrative work in preparation for future years.

3. Social life. I don't think I have one. Maybe I should get on that. Good call Tim. Coffee, anyone? or Boggle?

And that's about it.

So, I've started it, so now all those who read need to update the rest of us. See - you give a little, you get a little.

Go - WRITE!

pictures

I've had a bit of a chance to use my camera over the past few days while the weather's been un-seasonably warm and sunny, so I've gone for a few walks and here's what I've come up with [the wedding pics weren't on a walk, and it was somewhat cold and rainy that day, but still a fun day nonetheless.)
