Sometimes I am amazed at the creativity of server names over the Internet as well as page names. But this just threw me for a loop. I logged out of my Visa Inquiry and lo and behold along with the standard random numbers and letters, the address bar included this:
"YOUNGxCOCONUTxJUICExWITHxMEAT" less the x's.
I don't get it.

vonagers = never again
This year, I left the Internet and phone situation in our homestead up to another roommate. At their previous accommodations, they had Rogers Cable Internet for their provider (with one of those $10 junk wireless routers you get at Future Shop) and Vonage as their phone provider (VOIP). Supposedly everything worked just peachy for them.
And so, the Rogers Cable Internet and the Vonage made it to our house. One of the first things I did was to replace the router with a better one (Linksys WRT-54G), later bricked by Gord upon attempting to upgrade to the DD-WRT firmware. He still owes me a new one.
However, approximately once a day for the past few weeks, we have needed to give the router / Vonage router / modem a good hard reboot because it stops transmitting data. All at once. And because the phone is attached to the Internet, when we do this reboot process, any conversations are ended abruptly.
I keep reminding myself: only 2.5 more months and then I'm elsewhere. When we get to this new homestead, we will be getting DSL, not cable as our internet provider. We will be getting a landline, not VOIP as our telephone service. And life will be much more peaceful.
Out.

proposal
Ok. So here's what I'm proposing:
Option A: Accommodation
I really would like to live in the nice apartment (just because of the ensuite laundry, and really nothing else). But I can't justify the cost yet, so here's where you come in. You can all donate $10 a month for a year or a one-time payment of $120 to help me afford to live in this relative luxury. I figure I know of about 10 people who read this regularly, so if you all chip in your fair share (no skimping out here), I'll be blogging from a more spacious homestead come May.
Option B: WAWA
Alternatively, if you feel that my living in grandiose quarters is not something you feel the need to be a part of, I'll be participating in the upcoming Walk and Work Athon (WAWA - not the town in northern ON) with the EBC Student Council. The goal is to create 10 teams of 10 people to go around and help community groups through service projects for the day. This is a fundraiser, so all teams of 10 people have been asked to find 10 people to give them $10 each in order to raise the ultimate goal of $10,000 to go towards student bursaries, library book purchases, and various other fun things around EBC that normally wouldn't happen.
So, rather than giving $120 for the year (it's for the greater good, don't you know), you can donate $10 (or more) towards EBC and get a tax receipt out of the deal.
You can either comment below, e-mail me, call me, or send me a letter to let me know of your decision. Ask, and I'll let you know who to make your cheques out to. Cash is perfectly acceptable too.

apartment hunting 101
We've started looking for a place to live for next year. This is a relatively new concept to me because last year I went with the first place I looked at (and it worked out relatively ok), and this year was the group of 5's decision (which is ok other than being small and too much rent for the space).
So, going into the process for this year, Gord and I set out some ground rules (to help keep our decisions clear in times of duress) including our basic requirements for a place to live as well as some nice to haves:
Required:
NO student housing
$750+ Utilities or $1000 Inclusive (Maximum)
8' or greater ceilings
2 or more Bedrooms
1 or more Bathrooms
Quiet building
2 Parking spaces
2 blocks or less to Bus Route (preferably iExpress)
Laundry in Building
Nice to Have:
Laundry en-suite
Dishwasher
At grade, or w/elevator so Gord's dad can visit
Forced Air heating / Central Air Conditioning
Utilities Included
On iExpress Route
Walking distance to groceries, drugstore, restaurants
Living room and dining room
So far only one place that we've seen (out of 5) has had all the required as well as the recommended, but the price was at the level that you'd expect for having all of those things.
Places we've looked:
Gresham Place - Not bad, though the electrical circuitry in the building is old and has caused at least one fire in the past few years.
Cedarwoods and Highpoint - Small bedrooms, and expensive laundry
Ridgeway and Somerset - Close to my work, in a reasonable neighbourhood, recently renovated, but the bedrooms are somewhat small.
Anyway, these are all apartment buildings... I'm not sure if that's where I want to be, but if the price is right and all other things work together, then I guess that's what I have to do. It's only a year.
Out.

what?
I was sick last week, as mentioned before. As the week progressed, the feeling yucky disappeared, but the runny nose increased. I was blowing my nose a lot. And everytime I blew, my ears continued to get the feeling where they need to pop.
Until one day when the feeling didn't disappear. I noticed I was having trouble hearing higher tones and the pressure felt like it was sticking around.
So I went to the walk in clinic, and it turns out I have an ear infection. Go figure.
Oh well, I have some pills to take now and it'll go away with time.
Yay!

an earth-shattering moment
It is with great sadness I announce the usage of my first ever sick day. It was not a full day, only half a day, but at the same time, it has been lost to the annals of time and history.
I guess I have them to use when I need not bring my fellow employees down with me, but it's hard at the same time because of my call centre past where sick days hindered performance bonuses. I'm long beyond the performance bonus line of work, but at the same time, it is the mentality behind it.
Oh well. Life continues.
I'm feeling better today and hopefully will be better for tomorrow.
Out.

out with the old...
It's 2008. Woo.
That's about all that I have to say about that. The past 24 hours have been an astounding one, with me sleeping for about 10 of them and playing in the snow for another 1 or 2, reading for a bunch, and aimlessly surfing the 'net for the rest.
I had a revelation last night... maybe not a huge eye-opening experience, but a value-clarification that was needed. In regards to alcohol... I've never really been a large advocate for drinking of any variety. Not that alcohol is evil and I think that it should be banished from the earth and sent off into the abyss, just to get that out there. But I realized last night that I don't understand why anyone would really ever think that drinking to the point where they would not be fit to drive anymore is something fun. I know that alcohol, as a depressant, has relaxing effects and to some has a reasonable taste. But to consume it to the point where judgment is hindered and motor skills are extremely lessened is beyond me. The concept just doesn't make any sense to me.
I think what I'm trying to get at is that I'm not that type of person. I'm not here to judge those who think differently than I, I just want to express my thoughts on the subject. I know this isn't really a comprehensive view of both sides of the story, but it's a glimpse of my train of thought over the past 24 hours.
Before the torches and pitchforks come knocking at my door with a mob in tow, I'm out.
Also, today marks day one of my most recent streak of pop-less-ness. Iced tea (at restaurants in lieu of pop as part of the combo) is the only exception, as always.
